The wall unit sets back into the alcove and projects into the room only slightly. Its white painted wood design is elegant and yet is all about functionality. Around the flat screen TV are the items the owner likes to see always and the television is secondary to them. Same goes for the unattractive electronic components that we put behind doors yet made very accessible with a pull out box, making cable connections easy. I made the dovetail drawers in the workshop out of maple hardwood and sit on concealed soft-closing slides provided by Blum. At first the owners asked for a teak counter, 1 1/4" thick but changed that to a lesser know but much harder wood called cumaru. It was more difficult to work with than teak as it tends to twist and bow. A wide belt sander was needed to dress it once it was laminated to width. Finally, the white finish is a tough pigmented conversion varnish by M.L. Campbell. The counter was sealed with linseed oil blended with a bit of polyurethane. The success of this project came about due to the thorough design provided by the architect/client and good back and forth communication.
