This patio covering could just as well serve as a carport or a hanger for a small airplane. It can be made in any size to meet your needs. The construction is all pressure treated wood and will never succumb to rot or termites, plus white and clear corrugated pvc and steel bolts. It's arch shape gives it both strength and an ability to shed rain as well as an elegant look. I emphasized the grid structure by contrasting the color of the wood with the white panels, but could have also been painted white. I added a couple of clear panels in the middle to bring in the right amount of light. This design solves many problems of other types of awnings or covers: canvas is prone to damage in high, hurricane force winds and easily collects dirt and sometimes mold; an open plan plywood and asphalt roof would need some kind of skylight cut into it to admit light underneath and would be more costly to build. As intricate as this shelter looks it is actually easy to build, very strong to resist high wind (the panels have special screws as well as a steel "cap" on all the edges) and since it consists of not much material is very cost conservative. The "I-beam" that runs down the center is made pre-stressed and can hold the full weight of a man on it or hoist a small boat or car engine. This kind of shady shelter is a must for anyone familiar with the South Florida climate where sudden torrential rains combined with lots of sunshine can spoil a garden party as well as destroy our possessions.
